Assessments…Really?

**Warning** Political Rant Coming…
All we here from the federal governement is Race To The Top…ARRA…NCLB…etc and all they have in common is high stakes assessments. Now they are wanting to tie evaluations, funding, and tenure to how students do on a single test on a single day during a single time period and expect to be able to tell how effective teachers and administrators are during that day. DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS MISSING? How do we evaluate the parents that don’t provide adequate homework support at home or don’t attend or care about their student performance? How do we evaluate teachers that don’t teach core classes such as PE, Music, and Art? Are they not important anymore?
Arne Duncan and President Obama speak as though we have these low performing schools all over the US and that we rank so low in the world in Math and Science scores. Does every country have FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education)? Don’t think so!! Does the Chicago Public Schools have the same problems schools in western Kansas have? NO! We are not the same, there cannot be a universal solution to why some schools succeed and some fail. Yes there are bad teachers, yes there are bad adminstrations, but there are also systems in place for those students. Many many states and many different areas of each state have successful solutions to how to properly educate children.
Finally, to my point. DO NOT PAINT A BROAD SCOPE OF PUBLIC EDUCATION!! Not every school in the US is needing Superman…SOME of US already have him.
